NPP’s amnesty is good, but… – Arthur Kennedy

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, has welcomed the party’s decision to grant amnesty to suspended members but insists that true unity will only come through accountability and reconciliation.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the former presidential aspirant described the move as a step in the right direction but criticised its execution.

“I think the idea is good, but the implementation was poor,” he said.

Dr. Kennedy stressed that the party leadership should go beyond amnesty by apologising to members who were suspended under controversial circumstances.

“The unity that is needed is indispensable to the success of the party, and I think the party owes a lot of people an apology,” he urged.

He specifically mentioned former National Chairman Paul Afoko and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong as figures who deserved public apologies, arguing that such gestures would be symbolic of genuine reconciliation.

According to him, some suspended members were never invited to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee, which makes the amnesty even more important.

He added that divisions within the NPP weakened the party ahead of the 2024 elections, contributing to the loss of nearly 20 percent of votes that could have gone in their favour to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Kennedy maintained that acknowledging past mistakes and embracing reconciliation would be a stronger foundation for the party’s future than amnesty alone.
