Residents of Kwabenya, Ayim, and Brekuso took to the streets today to protest the deplorable state of roads in their communities.
Clad in red T-shirts, the demonstrators — made up of residents’ associations, keep-fit clubs, driver unions, farmers, traders, and the Concerned Citizens Association — converged at the Ashesi University Junction as early as 6 a.m. for a protest that lasted two hours.
Speaking to Adom News, the Apesemaka Hene of Brekuso, Nana Odei Leebi II, said First Sky Construction Company was awarded a contract in 2022 to rehabilitate the Dome-Kwabenya–Brekuso–Kitase road.
To support the project, the chiefs and elders of Brekuso allocated community land to the company for use as a temporary site and workers’ accommodation.
However, Nana Odei Leebi II lamented that barely a year into the project, work came to an abrupt halt, leaving the road in a worse condition than before.
The protesters are demanding that First Sky Construction vacate the land allocated to them and that government urgently resume work on the stalled road project.
Some drivers also voiced frustration, saying the poor road conditions are damaging their vehicles and increasing maintenance costs.
