The Kpando Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Killian Donkor, has successfully overseen the removal of decades-old refuse dumps in the municipality, including sites at Gabi Agorneme, Kudzra, and Gbefi.
These dumps, left unattended for over 30 years, had become eyesores and breeding grounds for diseases.
According to Mr. Donkor, the initiative is part of a wider sanitation improvement drive aimed at protecting public health, restoring environmental cleanliness, and enhancing the municipality’s image.
Residents expressed relief and gratitude over the development, noting that the refuse piles had posed serious health risks, especially during the rainy season when stagnant water and decomposing waste contributed to cholera outbreaks and other diseases.
Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Donkor emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainable waste management in Kpando. He hinted at plans to introduce modern waste collection points and public education campaigns on proper disposal practices.
“This is not just a one-time clean-up. We are putting measures in place to ensure that our city remains clean and free from environmental hazards,” he said.
The exercise, which began earlier this week, forms part of the Municipal Assembly’s broader agenda to enhance sanitation, beautify public spaces, and promote healthy living for residents.
Mr. Peter Pariki-Kwashie, the Municipal Environmental Health Analyst, explained that the dumps were not only unsightly but also posed serious environmental hazards, releasing offensive odors and polluting groundwater through leachate.
He applauded the MCE and the Municipal Assembly for their commitment to sanitation, saying their actions demonstrate a strong dedication to improving the living conditions of residents.
