GWL loses 73 million gallons daily in Accra – MD

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed that the company loses approximately 73 million gallons of treated water daily in the Greater Accra Region.

He explained that the huge losses stem from theft, illegal connections, and faulty infrastructure.

“In Greater Accra, we produce about 140 million gallons a day, but we can only account for 67 million gallons. That means we cannot account for 73 million gallons every single day,” Mr. Mutawakilu said in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV.

The situation, he noted, is further worsened by challenges in revenue collection.

“Even with the 67 million gallons that are accounted for, we are still unable to collect all the revenue,” he added.

Nationwide, Mr. Mutawakilu said only 48% of the water produced is properly accounted for, leaving more than half either lost or going unbilled.

Describing the situation as “unfriendly,” he warned that the persistent loss of such large volumes is threatening the company’s ability to fund operations and sustain service delivery.
