The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced a 20% increase in public transport fares, effective Friday, August 8, 2025.
According to information available to Adom News, the fare adjustment will apply across all categories of public transport, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, long-distance intercity buses, and haulage trucks.
The Council is urging commuters, transport operators, and the general public to cooperate with the smooth implementation of the revised fares.
The decision to increase fares comes in response to worsening road conditions nationwide, which have significantly raised vehicle maintenance costs. Transport operators say their operational expenses have continued to climb, despite a previous 15% fare reduction implemented on May 21, 2025.
Compounding the situation is a newly introduced GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, which has caused fuel prices to rise by approximately 8%, further straining the finances of drivers and transport companies.
Operators also noted that there has been no meaningful decrease in the cost of spare parts and other essential goods and services, making it increasingly difficult to sustain operations under current fare structures.
The GRTCC is appealing for public understanding as these adjustments take effect.
