We don’t need big names to impress in Africa – Gold Stars coach Frimpong Manso

Bibiani Gold Stars head coach, Frimpong Manso, says the club will rely on strong team preparation and a positive mindset rather than high-profile signings ahead of their debut appearance in the CAF Champions League.

Gold Stars secured their historic spot in Africa’s premier club competition after clinching their first-ever Ghana Premier League title last season.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, Manso dismissed the notion that continental success requires star-studded names, insisting that the club’s current squad, if properly conditioned, can rise to the occasion.

“The moment you mention Africa, it’s like you need some special players. No, they are the same players. What we need is to orient their mindset. And that is what we’ve started to do, because you cannot go and then bring in the Maradonas or the Peles at this time,” he said.

He stressed that thorough preparation will be key: “You see, it depends on the way you also prepare yourself. That also counts a lot. So, for me, I think we are new to the competition, but we will make the best out of it,” he added.

Bibiani Gold Stars will learn their preliminary round opponents on August 12, when the draw for the CAF Champions League gets underway.
