Former Western North Regional Minister Richard Obeng, popularly known as Joojo Rocky Obeng, is advocating for the inclusion of grassroots in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegate voting system, which he believes is crucial in strengthening the democratic foundation.
Mr. Obeng is calling on the party’s leadership to include past polling station executives and electoral area coordinators in the delegate list.
The call comes as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its extraordinary delegates conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on July 19, to consider constitutional amendments.
According to him, these individuals form the bedrock of the party and have demonstrated unwavering loyalty over the years.
Including them, he says, will help broaden the party’s Electoral College and ensure a more inclusive and fair decision-making process.
“All executives vote at polling stations. Former polling station executives should not be left out. They are the foundation of our party. If we truly want to broaden the base and build a stronger party, they must be included,” he stressed.
Mr. Obeng emphasized that fairness and transparency should guide every step the party takes, especially as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
He cautioned against using undemocratic tactics to favour one candidate over another and urged the leadership to be respectful and unbiased toward all hopefuls seeking positions within the party.
“We should not find a bad way to elect someone. What matters is fairness, unity, and respect for everyone who wants to serve,” he added.
He echoed similar sentiments shared by former Assin Central MP and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, calling for unity within the party.
Mr. Obeng stated that internal cohesion and respect for loyal party members—especially those at the grassroots level—are essential if the NPP hopes to reclaim power in the next general elections.
Furthermore, he commended the National Council for its decision to include all former national officers since 1992 in the upcoming vote to elect the party’s next flag bearer in January.
He described the move as a step in the right direction and urged that the same spirit of inclusiveness be extended to all levels of the party’s structure.
“As a political party in opposition, what we need most is patriotism. We need to bring everyone on board, especially our polling station executives, both past and present. They have worked hard and deserve a voice in deciding the future of our party,” he concluded.
Mr. Obeng’s call comes at a crucial time as the party gears up for internal reforms. His appeal underscores the growing demand for greater participation and fairness in the NPP’s internal electoral processes.
