The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite strike effective today, following the expiry of a seven-day ultimatum issued on June 24.

The strike arises from TEWU-GH’s objection to the recognition of the minority union, TEWU-TUC, as the official workers’ representative on the Governing Councils of Traditional Public Universities.

TEWU-GH claims this decision disregards its majority membership and rightful claim to representation.

In a statement, the union condemned the move as a violation of democratic principles and workers’ rights, accusing the authorities of failing to resolve the matter despite repeated engagements.

TEWU-GH’s demands include:

  • Immediate withdrawal of TEWU-TUC’s appointment as workers’ representative on university councils.

  • Directive from the Ministers of Labour and Education for the Chief Labour Officer to verify which union holds majority membership, in line with Labour Regulations 2007 (L.I. 1833).

  • Establishment of a transparent and democratic process for determining union representation in tertiary institutions.

The union called on labour organisations, stakeholders, and Ghanaians to support their cause, stressing the strike is necessary to safeguard fairness, transparency, and industrial harmony in the education sector.

Invoking its constitutional mandate and the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651), TEWU-GH urged all members to comply fully with the strike directives and remain united in pressing for their rights.
