Black Queens end WAFCON preparations with 3-1 defeat to Nigeria

-

The Black Queens of Ghana concluded their preparatory matches for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 3-1 defeat to archrivals Nigeria at the Lanoria Complex on Sunday.

Head coach Lars Kim Björkegren and his team have been camped in Morocco ahead of the tournament, fine-tuning their strategies with a series of friendly matches.

Ghana began their build-up with a 3-1 victory over Malawi last Saturday, followed by an impressive 4-2 win against Benin on Wednesday.

However, their momentum was halted in the final warm-up fixture, as they succumbed to a strong Super Falcons side.

Goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo, Asisat Oshoala, and Rasheedat Ajibade sealed the win for Nigeria, while Alice Kusi grabbed a consolation goal for the Black Queens.

With their friendly matches now concluded, the Black Queens will shift focus to the WAFCON tournament, scheduled to run from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.

Making their return to the continental showpiece for the first time since 2018, Ghana have been drawn into Group C alongside reigning champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

Coach Björkegren is expected to unveil his final squad for the tournament on July 1.
