National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, says he is not in support of the growing trend of endorsements by groups within the party for specific flagbearer hopefuls ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B stressed the need for cohesion within the party, cautioning that such endorsements risk dividing the ranks.
“We all want party cohesion. When former MMDCEs endorse one candidate and another group supports a different one, it creates unnecessary tension. That is why I don’t support such endorsements,” he said.
His comments come in the wake of recent public declarations by some former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) backing specific presidential hopefuls.
A group operating under the banner Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia recently endorsed the former Vice President as the preferred flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
Not long after, another set of former MMDCEs was reported to have paid a courtesy call on former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, during which they also declared their support for him.
But according to Nana B, such public displays of support are premature and could derail the party’s internal unity efforts.
“This is one of the reasons the leadership of the party has called a meeting with all presidential aspirants on July 3, 2025. We want to meet them, talk to them about the guidelines the National Council has approved, and advise them to speak to their followers so that we can maintain some sanity before the elections,” he stated.
Asked if he personally supports any of the aspirants, Nana B was emphatic.
“I don’t have a choice. We, as national officers, do not have a preferred candidate. Whoever the party elects to lead us, we will fully support,” he affirmed.
He clarified that there are no sanctions at the moment for the former MMDCEs, but the party’s leadership is taking steps to manage the situation through dialogue.
“We are not punishing anyone. This meeting is to help provide guidance so that everyone is on the same page moving forward,” he added.
