Why Mahama should not punish Sammy Gyamfi – Martin Kpebu [Listen]

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has appealed to President John Mahama not to punish the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.

Acknowledging the need for accountability among public officials, the lawyer said the incident should serve as a greater lesson.

“Absolutely, there should be no punishment, but it should be a lesson to all of us, and Sammy Gyamfi should know that his foes are many because of how he demolished the bad governance of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government with his analysis and work,” he stated.

The lawyer made the comment in reaction to a viral video that captured the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) handing out dollars to self-styled evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The outspoken politician has faced criticism amidst calls for his resignation or dismissal, despite his apology that the donation was a personal act of kindness and was never meant to attract public attention.

However, Mr. Kpebu, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, asserted that some elements are trying to use the incident for political gain.

“The people trying to score political points must exercise restraint. I know there are attempts to exaggerate the matter by some people with a political agenda. Some individuals are peeved, particularly NDC foot soldiers, but he cannot settle or give money to everyone,” he noted.

The lawyer emphasized that, after carefully analyzing the video, the amount involved could not exceed $3,000. He therefore finds it difficult to understand why some individuals are intent on tarnishing Sammy Gyamfi’s name and reputation over such a sum.

Meanwhile, following a summons by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has said the government is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness, regardless of its scale.
