Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has called on his teammates to adopt a “tough mentality” as Ghana prepare to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana face a demanding opening fixture against Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September before returning home to host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
Speaking to the media, Asare, the only home-based player in Carlos Queiroz’s squad, said the team is focused on making a winning start.
“From now going our preparations and mindset have to be tough to get our first win in the AFCON qualifiers,” he said.
The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper said every player must remain ready to contribute, regardless of whether they are selected to start.
“Like the coach said, whether you’re starting or on the bench, you have to have a tough mentality so that you’re ready when you’re called to action.”
Ghana are aiming to return to the continental tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, ending the country’s long-standing run of appearances at the competition.
Asare said the players are aware of the disappointment felt by supporters and are determined to restore confidence.
“Although we couldn’t qualify for the last tournament, the ultimate goal is to qualify for next year’s tournament so that we regain the trust, encouragement and support of Ghanaians ahead of the tournament.”
The goalkeeper also acknowledged that competition for places is an inevitable part of international football and said players must respect the decisions of the coaching staff.
“Every coach has their preferences and players they want to use for tournaments. The coach’s job is to call the players, and we do our best when we are called.”
Asare made his World Cup debut after replacing the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi against Panama before starting Ghana’s matches against England and Croatia. He remains one of three goalkeepers in Queiroz’s current squad.
With a difficult test against Côte d’Ivoire looming, Asare urged fans to get behind the team.
“Although everyone can criticise, we need the support of all Ghanaians to encourage us.”
After the two AFCON qualifiers, Ghana will conclude the international window with a friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on 4 October.
