Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has expressed optimism that Ghana can redefine its narrative on the global stage as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana will make its fifth appearance at the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

After consecutive group-stage exits in Brazil and Qatar, Semenyo believes the current squad has both the quality and mentality to progress further this time.

“I think that’s the intention. I feel like we do want to write our own story. We’ve got such a good team, and we just need to prove to the world that we can be up there and compete with everyone else,” Semenyo told FIFA.

He added that while ambition remains high, the immediate focus is on progressing beyond the group stage.

“I feel like that’s the only question right now, so once we do that, that’ll be the story written.”

“I don’t want to jinx anything, but for me personally, getting through the group stage would be a start for us. I feel like we can go on and do special things,” he added.

Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17 before facing England at Boston Stadium on June 23. Their final group match will be against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, the Black Stars will step up preparations with friendly matches against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.

Semenyo is expected to play a key role for Ghana when head coach Carlos Queiroz names his final squad on June 1.
