Former Ghana international Michael Essien has expressed confidence in the Black Stars ahead of their Group L showdown with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while admitting the encounter will be a stern test.
Ghana are set to face the Three Lions on June 23 at Gillette Stadium in what is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Chelsea star struck a balanced tone, praising England’s strength while making no secret of his hopes for his country.
“Hot? I don’t know, but I think it’s going to be a great game. A great match that everyone is looking forward to seeing. Hopefully it will be a good one, and the best team should win,” Essien said before adding with a smile, “I hope Ghana beats them.”
Essien also highlighted the quality and depth of England’s squad, even after several high-profile omissions from their final 26-man selection, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire.
“On a serious note, I think they have assembled the best players they could to represent the country, so yeah, it’s going to be an exciting one. We just have to sit back and enjoy the show.”
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, before taking on England and concluding the group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.
The Black Stars are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2010, having suffered back-to-back group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
Carlos Queiroz’s side are currently in camp preparing for a pre-tournament friendly against Wales on June 2, with the coach expected to finalize his 26-man squad ahead of the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
