Accra Academy has broken its long-standing semi-final jinx in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), qualifying for the grand finale for the first time in the school’s history.
The historic feat came after a commanding performance in the semi-final, where Accra Academy finished top of a three-school contest with 54 points.
Bright SHS followed with 44 points, while Achimota School ended the contest on 43 points.
Accra Academy maintained its lead from the opening round through to the final round, holding off a strong challenge from the two schools to secure its place in the final.
The qualification ends years of disappointment for the school, which had repeatedly struggled to progress beyond the later stages of the competition.
In previous editions, Accra Academy suffered eliminations at the one-eighth and quarter-final stages, with the school unable to break into the final until this year.
The school’s recent struggles included notable semi-final disappointments, particularly in 2016 and 2023, when it was eliminated by long-time NSMQ powerhouse PRESEC-Legon, in fiercely contested contests.
This year’s breakthrough now gives Accra Academy its first opportunity to compete for the NSMQ trophy.
The school, however, faces a double threat in the grand finale; the most decorated 8-time champions PRESEC-Legon, and 2-time champions St Augustine’s College.
Accra Academy, meanwhile, will be seeking a maiden title in what promises to be a historic final for the school.
The 2026 NSMQ Grand Finale is scheduled for September 10 at the University of Ghana, where the three schools will battle for the coveted championship.
