Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced the release of additional funds to support ongoing dredging and drainage projects following the devastating floods that affected parts of Ghana last month.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Forson said the intervention is aimed at accelerating dredging works and the construction of critical drains in flood-prone communities.
“Before I proceed with this Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, I wish to acknowledge the devastating floods that struck parts of our country last month. On the direction of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, I am making available additional resources for ongoing dredging and construction of critical drains in the affected areas,” he said.
The Finance Minister said the floods resulted in loss of lives, displacement of families, destruction of businesses and significant damage to public infrastructure.
“Mr Speaker, as Honourable Members will recall, the floods claimed lives, displaced families, destroyed businesses and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure,” he stated.
Dr Forson noted that Ghana was not the only country in the sub-region affected by severe flooding, citing similar incidents recorded in Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone.
He attributed the increasing frequency of such disasters to the growing impact of climate change, particularly along the West African coastline.
According to him, government responded to the floods by visiting affected communities, providing emergency relief support and organising a nationwide clean-up exercise to reduce the impact of the disaster.
He added that the additional funding will support ongoing dredging operations and improve drainage systems as part of efforts to prevent future flooding.
