Debibi United head coach Isaac Nii-Armah has apologised for comments he made about Asante Kotoko manager Eric Tinkler following their Ghana Premier League clash on Sunday.
Nii-Armah came under criticism after boasting about his unbeaten record against “white coaches” in the aftermath of Debibi United’s 2-2 draw with the Porcupine Warriors, who are coached by the South African tactician.
His remarks sparked a backlash on social media, with some observers describing the comments as racist.
Responding to the criticism, Nii-Armah issued an apology and insisted he had not intended to offend anyone.
“If my statement is being seen as ‘racist’, then I apologise,” he told Max FM.
“I was just expressing myself. People should be looking at the positive aspect. Why don’t we appreciate what we, the coaches, are doing?”
The match itself produced plenty of drama, with Kotoko taking an early lead through Yakubu Dogo after 15 minutes.
Debibi United responded strongly after the break, as Richard Owusu scored twice to overturn the deficit and put the hosts 2-1 ahead.
However, Kotoko salvaged a point when Hubert Gyau found the equaliser in the 79th minute to ensure the contest ended all square.
Kotoko will now turn their attention to their next league fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium, where they host Heart of Lions, while Debibi United travel to face Swedru All Blacks.
