The Sixth Ghana Living Standards Survey estimates that over 1.8 million children are engaged in child labour, out of which 1.2 million of them work under hazardous conditions and suffers from child trafficking.
Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Accra Right, Rev. Dr Sylvanus Torto has described the situation as very disturbing and extreme measures must be taken to curb it.
According to him, some parents sell their children for GHC100 while others take GHC50 and a bottle Akpeteshie.
Meanwhile, in view of that, the church in partnership with the US Embassy has under taken a 5-year campaign against child trafficking.
Bishop Torto called on the respective authorities to seek enforcement of the Children’s ACT 694 to ensure perpetrators of child trafficking are jailed five years as the law demands.
Nevertheless, he further added that the church is building a schools and homes for kids who will be rescued.
The US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Peter Jackson also expressed deep concern about the soaring rate of child trafficking in Ghana.
