A 19-year-old pregnant woman is battling for her life after being struck by a stray bullet during burial rites at Haawa Besease in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region.

The victim, identified as Alice Serwaa, was reportedly shot in the abdomen on Thursday night during the final funeral rites of a late queen mother in the community.

Serwaa is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel are working to stabilise her condition.

However, the unborn baby she was carrying did not survive after the bullet reportedly struck the foetus, resulting in a stillbirth.

An assembly member, Nana Osei Tutu, told Adom News that another young girl was also injured in the incident after being hit in the eye.

According to him, the local chief arrived in the community with a group of heavily built men, believed to be acting as enforcers, to ensure order during the burial rites of his late mother.

However, some local youth reportedly resisted attempts to enforce a directive for residents to remain indoors in reverence to the royal burial.

Nana Osei Tutu alleged that amid the resistance, the group assaulted some residents and fired gunshots in an attempt to scare the residents.

During the chaos, Serwaa, who was standing in front of her home, was hit by a stray bullet.

She was initially rushed to a nearby CHPS compound, where health workers administered emergency care before referring her to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, Serwaa’s family is appealing to authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
