A 23-year-old woman, Akua Afriyie, has confessed to killing her 4-year-old son by deliberately throwing him into a well in Karlo, a community in the Suaman District of the Western North Region.
The disturbing incident occurred on Saturday, July 21, 2025, and has left residents of the area in shock and disbelief.
According to the Assembly Member for the Karlo Electoral Area, Eric Armah, the suspect admitted during police interrogation that she committed the act in a desperate attempt to please a man she hoped to marry.
Per her confession, the man allegedly told her he would only marry her if she had no child from a previous relationship.
In response, Akua Afriyie returned to Karlo—after having relocated years earlier—in an effort to hide her intentions and ultimately carry out the act.
Investigations indicate that before the incident, the child reportedly pleaded with his mother to spare his life. Though she initially agreed, she later went through with her plan and threw him into the well.
The police have since taken over the case for further investigation. The body of the child has been retrieved and deposited at the Enchi Government Hospital morgue.
