Wildlife Division, NADMO respond to hippo invasion in Tolomedzi

In a proactive response to the recent invasion of hippopotamuses in Tolomedzi, a fishing community in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, officials from the Wildlife Division, Forestry Commission, and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) visited the area to assess the situation and provide assistance.

The unexpected arrival of these large mammals has raised serious concerns among residents, prompting immediate intervention. Adom News previously reported on the threat these animals pose to lives and property.

During the visit, Wildlife Division Manager Alfred Kofi Barah highlighted the need to understand hippo behavior, stressing that while often perceived as docile, the animals can be highly territorial and aggressive when threatened.

Residents have expressed fears for their safety, livestock, and crops, as hippos were seen wandering near homes and agricultural lands. Officials engaged the community to gather information on the extent of the invasion and its impact on daily life.

Jonathan Dzunu, Krachi East municipal NADMO director, noted that the organization had documented the damage caused by the hippos and would forward the report to relevant authorities for immediate support to affected farmers. He urged residents to follow guidelines on how to coexist safely with wildlife.

Adom News observed footprints of the mammals and destruction of farms, with some residents reporting that children are unable to attend school due to the wild animals along the river.

The collaboration between the Wildlife Division and NADMO underscores the importance of community engagement and wildlife management in protecting both humans and animals. Authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the Tolomedzi community as the situation develops.
