Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, former Chairman of Ghana’s National Peace Council and past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, has expressed deep concern over viral videos of some prophets claiming they foresaw the recent military helicopter crash.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Prof. Asante warned against exploiting national tragedies to showcase spiritual power or for personal gain.
“Someone’s tragedy should never be an opportunity to launch yourself or prove how powerful you are,” he said. “What is the motive behind these claims? The incident has already happened, and we must be very careful with such matters.”
He acknowledged that while the president may act on prophecies if he chooses, Ghana is a nation rich in diverse faiths and beliefs.
“You say it, then what? What did you do when you saw it?” Prof. Asante questioned. “The bottom line is, we have lost distinguished and hardworking people.”
Visibly emotional, he recalled the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, one of the crash victims and a devoted member of the Methodist Church.
“I remember seeing him at a couples’ event at Adum Methodist Church, where he even sang with his wife. My heart broke when I saw his picture and thought about how he died and how his remains were handled, kept in a sack,” he said solemnly.
The tragic crash, which claimed several lives including high-ranking government officials, has sparked national mourning and renewed discussions on the role of public prophecy in governance and society.
