The Electoral Commission (EC) has explained that the delayed collation of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results is due to pending legal advice from the Attorney General’s Department.
According to the Commission, it has made several attempts to complete the process but has been unable to proceed due to the absence of police protection.
The Deputy EC Chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, disclosed this during a briefing in Parliament on Thursday, June 19, 2025, noting that both the Police and the National Security Taskforce have stated they are awaiting legal direction from the Attorney General before taking any action.
He explained that during a scheduled meeting on April 10, 2025, the Commission was informed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had travelled to Bawku due to a conflict situation and would be briefed on the issue upon his return.
Subsequently, a letter was written to the Election Security Taskforce on May 2, 2025, requesting a follow-up meeting on May 8 to discuss the way forward.
“At the scheduled meeting on May 8, the collation process was agreed to be completed on May 15, 2025, at the old quarters of the Commission,” Dr. Asare said.
However, just two days before the scheduled date, the Police invited the EC to a meeting on May 13, where they revealed that a case concerning the Ablekuma North Constituency was pending before the Supreme Court. As a result, the Police said they could not provide security for the EC to complete the collation, arguing that doing so could constitute contempt of court.
Dr. Asare said the EC subsequently wrote to clarify that there was no injunction or legal process currently preventing the collation.
“The National Police Service and the National Security Taskforce, in response, informed the Commission that the matter had been referred to the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice for legal advice. They further stated that due to this referral, the National Security Taskforce would pause all action until the legal advice is received. Since then, we have followed up with the Police, and they have indicated they are still awaiting the AG’s advice,” he added.
Despite the delays, Dr. Asare reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to complete the collation process as soon as security support is provided.
