Former Ghana international Michael Essien has explained that his move into the coaching environment at Danish side FC Nordsjælland was driven by a shared vision centred on youth development and African talent pathways.

Speaking to FIFA, the ex-Chelsea midfielder pointed to his personal connection with former club owner Tom Vernon as the starting point of the opportunity, but stressed that the deeper appeal lay in the philosophy linking FC Nordsjælland with the Right to Dream network.

“I knew the former owner, Tom Vernon,” he told FIFA. “He asked me if I would be interested in coming here. I think what motivated me was the FCN (FC Nordsjaelland) and Right to Dream connection.

The former midfielder highlighted the presence of young African players within the setup as a key factor in his decision to get involved and contribute his experience to their development.

“We have a lot of African boys here, so I thought it would be nice to come on board and help out with the young ones because they are our future, so we need to give them all the advice and experience they need.”

Essien also reflected on the personal satisfaction of seeing young players he has worked with progress to higher levels and represent their countries on the international stage.

“You always feel joy when you see a young one that you’ve worked with represent their country.”

Essien joined FC Nordsjælland in August 2020 as part of his coaching education before later becoming integrated into the club’s coaching setup for the 2020–21 season. In June 2025, he signed a two-year deal to continue as assistant coach.
