The father of Ivan Apprey Baidoo, the 20-year-old Central University law student who died in a motorbike crash on the Tema Motorway, has told mourners that his son was murdered and demanded to know what crime he committed.
Speaking at Ivan’s burial service on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Evans Baidoo Esq. said the memory of seeing his son’s lifeless body on a stretcher still traumatises him.
“Seeing your lifeless body on a stretcher still traumatises me. The circumstances of your sudden demise make me…” he said, struggling to express the depth of his pain.
He said his son was murdered by a police officer paid to protect him.
“Your sudden demise has left me inconsolable. You did not die, son; you were murdered. Brutally murdered by a police officer paid with your parents’ taxes to protect you,” he said.
“Who did this to you, and what was your crime?” he questioned.
Ivan left his home in Old Ashongman on August 27 to play football with friends at the East Legon Astroturf Park, travelling on a Yango motorbike from Ashongman Estates, but never returned home.
According to the prosecution, the rider, Samuel Wesley Arthur, went through a red light at the UPSA intersection, where General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng, 34, was on duty.
The officer, who belongs to the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at Police Headquarters in Accra, pursued the motorbike and signalled the rider to stop, but the rider allegedly carried on through the Okponglo traffic light and the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange onto the Tema Motorway.
After the Old Tollbooth, the prosecution alleges, the officer kicked the motorbike with his leg as he chased it.
The rider lost control and the bike crashed into a concrete barrier, but Corporal Koranteng allegedly did not stop or arrange immediate medical help before speeding away.
Ivan was pronounced dead on arrival at the Tema General Hospital, while the rider was treated and discharged.
The Ghana Police Service has interdicted Corporal Koranteng.
On Tuesday, September 15, he was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court, charged with murder.
The charge is intentionally causing death by unlawful harm, contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Corporal Koranteng has been charged but not convicted, and the allegations against him are those of the prosecution.
