What is special about Ken Ofori-Atta? – Special Prosecutor asks

-

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has strongly criticised former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, over his failure to appear for questioning on Monday, June 2, 2025, despite an earlier agreement.

The former Minister is under investigation over the controversial revenue assurance contract with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), financial dealings involving the construction of the National Cathedral, and other procurement and expenditure issues that occurred during his tenure as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024.

The legal team has proposed that Mr. Ofori-Atta be allowed to provide a caution statement virtually, citing provisions under the Electronic Transactions Act.

However, the Special Prosecutor has insisted that Mr. Ofori-Atta appears in person for the necessary process to take place, adding he remains a wanted person after failing to appear for questioning despite several invitations.

At a press conference, Mr. Agyebeng stressed that no one is above the law and there is nothing special about Mr. Ofori-Atta that warrants special treatment.

“We investigated a former president, have you forgotten? On August 8, 2024, I came right into this room and told Ghanaians our findings and conclusions. A former president. He was served with the same process. He showed up, much less a former Finance Minister,” he stated.

He noted that this is not the first instance of someone being declared wanted or summoned for questioning.

“Is this the first time someone in this country has been declared wanted? All the persons previously declared wanted before him, were they not human? There’s nothing secretive about it. It is just a simple legal process.”
