Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says government has abrogated about 20 power purchase agreements signed by the Mahama government.
He said they have saved the nation some $300 million through the cancellation of about 20 agreements and review of four others. This, he said, has “helped to reduce government expenditure.”
Speaking Monday at a Joy FM town hall meeting, Bawumia said the government has however asked “four of them to go ahead and the rest to delay by two or three years and by so doing, we have managed to reduce government’s liability.”
Government, he added, also secured financing for two major electrification project and when implemented, would extend electricity to over 800 communities.
Since taking over the rein of power on January 7, the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government has not shied away from registering its disappointment with the way the previous administration handled the energy sector.
At his first State of the Nation Address in February, the President said he was handed a heavily-indebted energy sector that owed its private partners a total sum of $2.4 billion as at December 2016.
President Akufo-Addo noted $800 million out of the total was owed to local banks which was threatening their stability and that of the financial sector.
But 100 days after taking the sacred oath to protect the Constitution and drive prosperity, the Vice President said they have recorded more than 103 achievements.
If this is how our new government is going to manage affairs of the state, then it gives us hope for good signs for the future. But who else must fix the mess created by their own colleague politicians? It is sad to note that politicians who come to power on the wings of making things good for the ordinary man, rather turn round to think of their stomach, if what Ghanaians are hearing about the Mahama lead administration is anything to go by. It’s early days yet, but we must all pray for the good of our motherland and not be selfish.
