Western North Traditional leaders appeal to Mahama for University, Regional Hospital

Traditional authorities in the Western North Region have called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the establishment of a public university and a regional hospital in the region.

The appeal was made by the Chief of Sehwi Boinzan and Kontihene of the Sehwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Nana Ofori Ahenkan II, during Mr. Mahama’s “Thank You” tour to the region.

Addressing a gathering of chiefs, opinion leaders, and residents, Nana Ofori Ahenkan II highlighted the region’s longstanding challenges in accessing quality higher education and healthcare.

He noted that despite the Western North Region’s significant contribution to the national economy, particularly through cocoa production, it continues to lack essential public infrastructure such as a university and a regional hospital.

He urged Mr. Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prioritise the region in their future development plans and ensure that residents benefit equally from national resources.

In response, President Mahama acknowledged the concerns raised by the traditional leaders.

He assured the gathering that plans were underway to establish a public university in the region, with consultations ongoing between the government and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

He also disclosed that the proposed regional hospital for the Western North Region is currently at the design stage and will be considered in future development projects.
