Cocoa farmers in the Western North Region have staged a protest against the recent reduction in cocoa prices, which dropped from GH¢3,625 to GH¢2,587 per bag.

The demonstration brought together farmers from districts including Sefwi Wiawso, Juaboso, and Bia West, who marched through principal streets holding placards with messages such as “Restore Our Price Now” and “Cocoa Sustains Ghana, Don’t Neglect Farmers.”

The farmers accused the government of failing to protect their livelihoods amid rising costs of farm inputs and labour. They argued that the sharp price reduction would make it difficult to maintain their farms, pay workers, and support their families.

Describing the decision as unfair and insensitive, the farmers stressed that cocoa remains a major contributor to the nation’s economy.

Speaking on behalf of the group, a farmer leader warned that the reduction could discourage production and negatively impact the local economy. He urged the government and the Ghana Cocoa Board to immediately review the price to reflect current economic realities.

The demonstrators also cautioned that their protests would escalate if their concerns were not addressed promptly. Security personnel were deployed to ensure the march remained peaceful.
