Residents of New-Dormaa Mango Grove in the Sunyani Municipality were plunged into mourning on Sunday night after a devastating fire claimed the lives of a prominent Wenchi sub-chief and his wife.
The victims, identified as 65-year-old Nana Siribour Ampoo II and his 48-year-old wife, Grace Yaa Ampoo, lost their lives in the inferno, which broke out around 11:00 p.m. amid a torrential downpour that swept through parts of Sunyani.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the fire spread swiftly through the building, leaving the couple trapped inside despite frantic efforts to escape. Other occupants of the house, however, managed to flee unhurt.
When Adom News visited the scene on Monday morning, the once-vibrant home had been reduced to rubble and ashes, with the community mourning the painful loss.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) Kwame Adomako of the Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that his team received a distress call late Sunday night but arrived to find the blaze already raging uncontrollably.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victims may have attempted to escape but were trapped before they could reach safety.
ADO1 Adomako described the incident as deeply unfortunate and expressed concern over the rising number of residential fires reported in the Bono Region.
He advised the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any fire incidents through the Service’s emergency line (03520-27129) to ensure swift intervention.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined as police and fire investigators continue their joint inquiry into the incident.
