The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, is optimistic that part of the revenue Ghana generated from the 2026 World Cup will be allocated to the NSA to support stadium upgrades.

Ghana secured the hosting rights for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which coincides with the country’s 70th Independence Anniversary. It will be the second time Ghana hosts the youth tournament after first staging the competition in 1999.

According to the NSA boss, some countries have demonstrated transparency by outlining how funds allocated for major sporting projects will be utilised, suggesting Ghana could adopt a similar approach.

“Other countries do it. I think DR Congo recently released their plan on how to, you know, use their funds, and I’m sure the GFA would do something similar in due course,” he said.

Mr Ampofo Ankrah, however, revealed that discussions on funding are ongoing and urged Ghanaians to remain patient and optimistic as stakeholders work towards securing the resources needed.

“Conversations are ongoing, so let’s be patient and let’s be optimistic that we’ll hear something very positive,” he said.

The NSA boss said the Authority is prepared to channel any funds it receives into improving the country’s sporting facilities and ensuring the necessary work is completed.

“For the NSA, you know, any good money that comes, yes, we’ll take it to make sure that we do the right work. So, we’re hoping that there’ll be good news, and hopefully that will be soon,” he added.

With significant improvements required to meet CAF standards for stadium infrastructure and playing surfaces, the availability of funding remains critical to Ghana’s preparations to successfully host the tournament.
