We must improve in decision-making, says Ghana coach Otto Addo

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has called for improvements in decision-making and intensity following the Black Stars’ 2-0 loss to Japan in Friday’s Kirin Challenge Cup clash at Toyota Stadium.

Speaking after the match, Addo highlighted several areas exposed in the second half that require urgent attention ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The former Borussia Dortmund talent coach emphasised the need for better possession management in advanced areas and more aggression in contesting loose balls.

“We really need to learn to get our timing right in our passing,” he said. “We need to hold the ball better up front and be stronger on second balls. We also have to raise our intensity.”

The coach also pointed to positional discipline, particularly when facing high pressing from opponents.

“We have to be in better positions in the pressing and outplay the pressing. There are many things we have to work on,” he stated.

Acknowledging the absence of key players and the limited familiarity among starters, Addo urged patience while stressing the importance of progress.

“The guys are young and can learn. We have a few more matches before the World Cup. We have to unite more as a team and be much more dangerous up front.”

The Black Stars have now travelled to Seoul ahead of their second friendly against South Korea on Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled at 10:00 am.
