A resident of Tema Community 25 in the Savannah Junction area near New Dawhenya, Janet Baidoo, has said she and other affected families were given no prior notice before the demolition of their homes, following the enforcement of a court ruling over a disputed parcel of land.
She said the operation, which took place at dawn, was the first time residents were informed of any eviction order.
“We had no prior notice. Nobody told us anything. That morning, when they came, was the first time we were hearing about it,” she told Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.
According to her, security personnel claimed they had been called in early in the morning to enforce a court decision.
“They said the police were called at dawn to come and carry out the exercise,” she added.
Janet Baidoo expressed frustration over what she described as a lack of transparency from the authorities involved.
“Come to the ground and ask people yourself if they were given any notice. They just came to take people’s things out,” she said.
She also said residents were not provided with any official documentation at the time of the demolition.
“When we asked them to show us the court order, they refused. They didn’t give us any reason why our houses had to be demolished,” she stated.
Describing the scene, she said many of the affected houses were fully completed and occupied.
“Come and see people’s houses that have been demolished. These are not structures on waterways or in bad condition. These are proper houses built with people’s hard-earned money,” she said.
Janet further claimed that residents were unsure who was behind the enforcement exercise.
“They say the person who won the court case is out of the country, and we don’t even know who is behind all this,” she added.
She questioned the fairness of the process and the human impact of the demolition.
“If you have won a court case, do you not see that people used their hard-earned money to build these houses? Just look at what has been done. How do we even recover from this damage?” she lamented.
Her comments follow the demolition of several structures at Savannah Junction, where residents say they were caught up in a long-standing land dispute involving multiple claimants and repeated sales of the same plots.
