The Ablekuma North parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ewurabena Aubynn, has welcomed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Aubynn acknowledged that while a rerun was not the outcome she had hoped for, she believes it is necessary for peace and fairness.
“This isn’t our heart’s desire, but it’s only fair for them to do this. I believe it is God’s way of preventing chaos in Ablekuma North and Ghana at large. The party leadership has engaged us and urged us to cooperate with the process, so we accept it,” she said.
In a press release dated July 2, 2025, the EC announced that the rerun will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The upcoming rerun has become a high-stakes contest, as both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intensify efforts to secure the crucial parliamentary seat in the Greater Accra Region.
However, the NPP and its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, have strongly opposed the move, insisting that she won the election held on December 7, 2024, and vowing to resist any attempt to “subvert the will of the people.”
Responding to this, Ewurabena Aubynn accused her opponent of entitlement and refusal to accept defeat.
“She thought the general election would be a walk in the park just because she won the NPP primaries after distributing goodies,” she claimed.
“She’s a former MP, and people can attest to her manipulative games, aggression, and underhand tactics during elections. For them, it’s not about hard work or campaigning, it’s about buying fridges and sharing money,” Ewurabena alleged.
“But this time, the majority of voters in Ablekuma North voted for change, for development, and they voted massively for Ewurabena Aubynn.”
The EC’s decision to hold a rerun follows the NDC’s concerns over the use of scanned Pink Sheets by the NPP as part of the results.
According to the EC, the scanned Pink Sheets from 19 polling stations lacked proper verification from Presiding Officers, even though party agents had signed off on them.
The Commission has assured the public of a peaceful and transparent process, with the Ghana Police Service providing security.
