A medical doctor is warning of dire consequences for women who constantly wear waist cinchers or trainers for an hour glass body shape.
According to Dr Ebenezer Inkoom, some of the most common problem are decreased abdominal muscle tone, visceral displacement and atrophy of the abdominal walls.
Speaking on Adom FM’s midday news Friday, owner of Inkoom hospital at Spintex road in Accra noted that other health risks include deformation of the stomach, liver and lungs and decreased breathing capacity.
He indicated that, the long term use of the product could cause permanent organ and nerve damage.
“First of all it tightens the stomach and changes it shape. It can cause the gastric acid to rise up to the oesophagus -reducing blood to the liver and kidney. It further causes irritations and reactions to the body…” he described.
Dr. Inkoom blamed the upsurge of the use of waist trainers among Ghanaians women on endorsement made by celebrities.
“Just because a celebrity promotes it doesn’t mean that it’s safe or that it works or that it’s proven,” he stressed.
At best, he said waist trainers should be worn for workouts at the gym to achieve the needed results.
According to Dr Ebenezer Inkoom, people who wear waist trainers can resort to diet or gym programs than putting their lives at risk in the long run.
“In about 15-20 years, people who usually wear the waist trainers will start having medical complications…” Dr. Inkoom warned.
