Staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale have resolved to withdraw all field services in the Tamale Metropolis and surrounding areas following a violent attack on personnel on July 30.
According to a resolution signed by the Senior Staff Association (SSA) and Divisional Union leaders, some staff were forcefully removed from their official vehicles and brutally assaulted by youth in Tamale. The seized vehicles were reportedly taken to the Gukpena Palace.
The staff groups say this latest incident adds to a series of unprovoked attacks on VRA/NEDCo personnel in the region dating back to 2015. Past incidents include assaults in Lamakara, Dohinayilli, and Vittin, often while staff were carrying out disconnection exercises with police escorts.
In their resolution, the workers are calling on NEDCo management, in collaboration with law enforcement, to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
They also demand an explanation for the assault and a strong commitment from all stakeholders to guarantee the safety and protection of VRA/NEDCo staff and property.
Additionally, they want the immediate retrieval of the seized vehicles from the Gukpena Palace.
Though field operations are suspended, staff say they will continue to report to the office and perform indoor duties until further notice.
