VRA clarifies ownership of helicopter in Nkawkaw emergency landing

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has dismissed media reports suggesting it owns the helicopter with registration number 9G-AFW, which made an emergency landing in Nkawkaw, Eastern Region, on Monday, August 11, 2025.

The incident, attributed to poor visibility from bad weather, followed a similar emergency landing at Ajumako Kokoben on Wednesday, August 6.

VRA’s Director of Corporate Affairs and External Relations, David Adomako, clarified in a statement: “We would like to state unequivocally that the said helicopter does not belong to VRA, and neither does VRA operate aviation services.”

He further explained that the aircraft is owned by Volta River Aviation Limited (VRAL), a completely separate entity registered with the Petroleum Commission.

“Our mandate is to provide affordable, reliable electricity to power economies and add value to lives. Aviation services are not part of our mandate,” the statement added.

VRA has urged the public and media to disregard the inaccurate reports and verify information with its Corporate Affairs and External Relations Department before publication.

For official queries, the Authority directed the public to contact corpcomm@vra.com or reach Francis Kobena Abban, Manager of Corporate Communications and Branding, at 0302-218551 or 0245-823734.

Adding to the concern, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) confirmed that the aircraft is not registered with the agency. Chief Forecaster Felicity Ahafianyo warned that unregistered aircraft may not have access to official weather updates, raising questions about flight safety.

The clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny over aviation safety following last week’s fatal military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

“Given recent incidents, it is critical that only verified information is shared to avoid confusion and panic,” VRA noted.
