Voting at the Nima Cluster of Schools for the NDC Ayawaso East parliamentary primary is underway amid allegations of vote buying.

Footage circulating online reportedly shows delegates receiving 32-inch TVs from the campaign team of aspirant Baba Jamal, with some captured holding the sets in boxes.

Some voters have also claimed that other candidates distributed cash and motorcycles to delegates a day before the election.

NDC Deputy Organizer Ako Gun said he is unaware of any vote buying but acknowledged that the issue is being discussed by party members.

Despite the controversy, voting is proceeding peacefully, with organizers and police praised for maintaining order at the polling station.

Accra Mayor Kpakpo Allotey and Ako Gun both expressed confidence that the winner of the primary is likely to secure the parliamentary seat in the upcoming by-election.

The NDC is conducting the primary to elect a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election after five aspirants were successfully vetted and cleared to contest.

The contenders are Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman; Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed.

Reacting to the development, Baba Jamal said the items were presented as gifts and insisted he did not expect them to influence the choices of delegates.

“Sharing the TVs is only a gift, but allowing that gift to influence your votes is what is wrong,” he told journalists.

A total of 1,039 delegates are expected to cast their votes in the contest.
