Kenyan football suffered a serious blow on Sunday when violent clashes erupted ahead of a high-profile Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia, leaving 66 fans hospitalized.
The anticipated showdown at Gusii Stadium turned chaotic even before kickoff, as rival supporters engaged in violent confrontations.
Spectators threw stones and other objects, resulting in multiple injuries, including two individuals who sustained skull fractures.
Despite Gor Mahia securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory, thanks to a late goal from midfielder Sylvester Wanyama, the match was overshadowed by the disturbing violence in the stands.
Gor Mahia later released a statement expressing concern over the incident: “We witnessed very sad moments at Gusii Stadium before the game. Police confirmed that 66 fans were injured and admitted to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and RAM Hospital. We wish a quick recovery to all those affected.”
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) also condemned the violence, calling for peace and accountability in the sport.
“Football must remain a unifying force, not one that endangers lives,” the FKF stated. “The safety of fans, players, and officials is paramount. We are collaborating with the relevant authorities to uncover the root causes and will take decisive disciplinary action once investigations conclude.”
A formal investigation is now underway, amid mounting pressure from the public and football stakeholders for improved security and enhanced crowd control at stadiums nationwide.
