Vincent Assafuah hints at review after Supreme Court dismisses bid to halt Chief Justice’s removal

-

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has hinted at filing for a review of the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss his application seeking to stop the removal and suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The court, in a narrow 3-2 majority ruling, rejected the injunction request on Tuesday.

Justices Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Yonny Kulendi, and Amadu Tanko voted to dismiss the case, while Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented.

Reacting to the outcome in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Assafuah, who was represented in court by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, said he was not entirely surprised by the verdict but saw hope in the minority opinion.

“What I was expecting in court did not happen, but the fact that two judges saw merit in my argument suggests to me that we have a case. So I don’t think I will drag my feet in seeking a review,” he said.

He added that while he respects the ruling as a lawyer, he believes the matter deserves a second look.

The Supreme Court is expected to release the full reasoning behind its decision on May 21, 2025.
