Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has congratulated Ghana’s Black Queens following their qualification to the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The team booked their place in the next stage after their 4-2 victory over the Fennecs of Algeria on July 19 through a penalty shootout.

In a congratulatory message on Facebook, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang rallied national support for the team as they prepare to face Morocco.

“A big congratulations to our Black Queens for their remarkable victory over Algeria to secure a spot in the Women’s AFCON semi-finals. As they prepare to face Morocco, we salute their resilience and urge them to keep pushing. The whole nation is behind you. The dream is alive,” she wrote.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan stood tall as Ghana’s standout performer, making two vital saves in the penalty shootout to secure the Black Queens a historic semi-final spot—their first in nine years.

The team began the encounter with strong intent and appeared to have taken the lead midway through the opening half when Stella Nyamekye scored. However, the goal was overturned following a VAR review.

Ghana maintained control throughout the first 45 minutes, with close attempts from Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah keeping pressure on their opponents.

In the second half, head coach Kim Lars Björkegren made tactical substitutions—bringing on Evelyn Badu for Nyamekye and later Princella Adubea in place of Princess Marfo. Badu nearly sealed victory late in the game but was unable to convert a clear opportunity, sending the contest into extra time.
