Veteran journalist Akwasi Agyeman eyes GJA General Secretary role

-

Respected broadcast journalist and editor at Adom FM, a subsidiary of the Multimedia Group Limited, Akwasi Agyeman, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

With over two decades of experience in journalism across Ghana and Africa, Mr. Agyeman brings a wealth of expertise, leadership, and advocacy to the race.

He is number 2 on the ballot paper and faces strong competition from Dominic Hlordzi, the current Organising Secretary, in the election scheduled for June 30, 2025.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Agyeman has risen through the ranks to become an editor, widely recognised for his commitment to press freedom, ethical journalism, and the welfare of journalists nationwide.

“I am standing for this role not just as a journalist, but as someone who understands the challenges of the profession and is ready to help reposition the GJA as a proactive, supportive, and unifying force for all media professionals,” he stated.

Over the years, Mr. Agyeman has represented Ghana’s media on several international platforms, having served as an election observer in Togo, Nigeria, and Liberia—showcasing the pivotal role of journalism in strengthening democracy across the continent.

His academic contributions are equally notable. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ) and a PhD candidate at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana.

His ongoing research, titled “The Dynamics of Rejected Ballots in Africa,” offers a deep analysis of Ghana’s electoral processes from 1992 to 2020.

As a longstanding member of the GJA since 2007, he has played significant roles in the Association’s activities, including serving on the GJA Awards Committee for three consecutive years under the leadership of the late Dr. Doris Dartey and Mrs. Betty Apau-Oppong.

He also led journalist safety communication training initiatives from 2018 to 2020, aimed at equipping media practitioners with the tools and strategies needed to operate safely and effectively in high-risk environments.

As he throws his hat into the ring for the role, Mr. Agyeman says his vision is to strengthen the internal structures of the Association, foster greater regional participation, and promote professional development opportunities for members across the country.

“The GJA must be a vibrant, inclusive, and future-ready Association. I am committed to making that a reality,” he affirmed.
