Workers of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) have called for the immediate removal of Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), accusing him of mismanagement and failing to engage key stakeholders.

The demand came during a protest organized by the workers’ union on Monday, February 9, where demonstrators described Mr. Ankrah’s leadership as incompetent and authoritarian.

The union claims that the CEO’s portrayal of VALCO as heavily indebted and in need of external investors is misleading and appears to be aimed at paving the way for the sale of the state-owned company.

Addressing the protesters, Local Union Chairman Samuel Watchman Agyeman said repeated attempts to engage Mr. Ankrah through dialogue had been ignored, including a formal letter sent on December 18.

“He doesn’t take advice from anybody. What he says he wants to do, whether good or bad, is what he does,” Mr. Agyeman stated.

The union stressed that VALCO has the capacity to operate profitably without ceding control to external investors. They also argued that the ongoing search for a strategic partner amounts to a covert sale of a national asset and called for the process to be halted to allow for a transparent review of the company’s true operational potential.
