Residents of the Kaiser Flats in Tema Community 4 have been given a stark choice to vacate immediately or remain at their own risk following a firm directive from the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei.

The order comes amid growing concerns over the structural integrity of the aging building, which authorities say now poses a serious threat to life.

During a recent inspection of the facility, the minister instructed the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) to ensure that all residents either leave without delay or formally sign an agreement acknowledging the risks of staying.

Officials say the move is not sudden but the culmination of months of engagement with residents. The TDC had earlier arranged alternative accommodation in Kpone to facilitate the safe relocation of occupants and allow for the demolition and redevelopment of the deteriorating flats.

However, a number of residents have declined to move despite the provision of new housing options.

Speaking during the inspection, Mr. Adjei underscored the urgency of the situation, pointing to the recent building collapse at Accra New Town as a sobering reminder of the consequences of inaction. He stressed that government is determined to avoid a similar disaster and will not compromise when it comes to public safety.

The Minister acknowledged the resistance from some occupants but maintained that no reason justifies putting lives at risk.

He urged residents to prioritise their safety and comply with the evacuation directive, emphasising that the condition of the Kaiser Flats leaves little room for delay.

With the directive now in force, attention turns to how quickly residents will respond and whether authorities will need to enforce the evacuation to prevent a potential tragedy.
