Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has clarified that the recent U.S. visa suspension does not affect Ghanaians applying for B1 and B2 visas, which are issued for business and tourism purposes.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Ambassador Smith explained that the directive applies only to immigrant visas for individuals seeking permanent residence in the United States.
“The visa ban does not include B1 and B2 applicants. It only affects those who want to permanently relocate to the USA,” he stated.
His clarification follows an announcement by the United States government suspending immigrant visa processing for Ghana, Nigeria, and 73 other countries.
According to a U.S. State Department spokesperson, the move forms part of measures to strengthen national security and enhance vetting procedures.
The suspension, which takes effect from January 21, will remain in force indefinitely while the review process continues.
