Ghana has achieved a major diplomatic breakthrough as the United States has lifted the visa restrictions imposed on the country in July this year.
The development restores eligibility for Ghanaians to secure five-year multiple-entry visas, along with other enhanced consular privileges.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the news on his Facebook page on Friday, September 26, after receiving official confirmation from US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker.
The update was communicated during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He explained that the decision follows months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Accra and Washington.
It will be recalled that in July 2025, the US government restricted Ghanaians to a maximum three-month single-entry visa, citing concerns about visa overstays, particularly among students.
The reversal has since been hailed as a positive sign of stronger Ghana–US relations going forward.
