The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that two people died in a multiple-vehicle crash and fire which occurred on the Accra-Kumasi Highway on Monday.
According to the GNFS, the crash, which happened near the Birimso Bridge section of the N6 Highway, involved a fuel tanker, an STC bus, a Mitsubishi pick-up with registration number GE 8602-17, and a Kia Sorento saloon car with registration number GT 8601-14.
The Fire Service said it received a distress call at 11:00 a.m. and arrived at the scene three minutes later to contain the blaze that followed the collision.
The fuel tanker, the STC bus and the pick-up were completely destroyed by the fire, while the Sorento sustained extensive damage.
The two people who died were both occupants of the tanker. Their bodies were burnt beyond recognition and have been handed over to the police for identification.
Six other victims, four men and two women, were rescued from the scene and taken to Hawa Memorial Hospital for treatment. The cause of the crash and the fire is still under investigation.
The crash resulted in heavy traffic on both lanes of the highway, causing motorists heading to Accra to be diverted through Kibi at Nsutam. Those travelling to Kumasi were also diverted through Apedwa.
Firefighters have since extinguished the blaze and cleared debris to restore normal traffic flow.
