Unity Cup: CK Akonnor hails Black Stars’ convincing win over Trinidad and Tobago

-

Former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has praised the senior national team for their impressive 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place match of the 2025 Unity Cup.

After a narrow 2-1 loss to Nigeria in the semifinals, Ghana bounced back strongly on Saturday at the GTech Community Stadium to secure third place in the tournament.

The emphatic win was powered by goals from Jordan Ayew, Razak Simpson, Mohammed Fuseini, and Lawrence Agyekum, capping off a dominant performance by Otto Addo’s side.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, set to resume in September, Akonnor believes the convincing result will boost the team’s morale.

“The victory against Trinidad and Tobago was good enough to lift their confidence ahead of any competitive match,” the former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko coach told Graphic Sports.

Akonnor also singled out Jordan Ayew for special praise, applauding him for showing strong leadership on the pitch, which he believes will inspire the next generation of players.

“I like the way Jordan showed great leadership on the field of play. It will give the young ones confidence in their game,” he said.

Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points from six matches and are set to face Chad away before hosting Mali in Matchdays 7 and 8 of the qualifiers.
