Union leaders must put workers first – Francis Ahovi

Security analyst and governance advocate, Francis Ahovi

Security analyst and governance advocate, Francis Ahovi, has called for urgent reforms within Ghana’s labour unions, warning that self-serving actions by some union leaders risk destabilising industrial peace.

In a statement released by the Global Security for Africa Research and Good Governance (GLOSARGG), where he serves as Executive Secretary, Mr Ahovi acknowledged the crucial role unions play in championing workers’ rights but cautioned that a few leaders exploit the movement for personal or political gain.

He proposed three key interventions to restore credibility:

  • Transparent, merit-based union elections.

  • Independent monitoring of polls by neutral bodies such as the Labour Commission or credible civil society groups.

  • Mandatory training in negotiation, conflict resolution, and ethics, supported by a strict, enforceable code of conduct.

“Safeguarding the dignity of workers requires leaders who put the collective good above personal ambition,” he said.

Mr Ahovi concluded that accountable union leadership remains essential for sustaining industrial harmony and advancing Ghana’s development goals.
