United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has pledged the full support of the United Nations to President John Dramani Mahama as Ghana prepares for its anticipated assumption of the African Union chairmanship in 2027.
The commitment follows the unanimous endorsement by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which backed President Mahama’s candidature for the continental leadership role.
The assurance was given during a meeting between the two leaders on Friday, February 13, held on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Beyond discussions on the upcoming AU leadership transition, the talks also addressed several pressing issues facing the continent, including security concerns in the Sahel and efforts to strengthen democratic governance across Africa.
Mr. Guterres praised Ghana’s role in promoting regional stability, particularly within West Africa, and noted that the country is expected to play a key part in responding to emerging threats in the region.
The security situation in the Sahel featured prominently during the meeting, with attention focused on developments within states belonging to the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES).
President Mahama briefed the UN chief on ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions and helping restore peace in the affected areas.
At the close of their discussions, the UN Secretary-General presented President Mahama with a symbolic gift: a copy of the United Nations Charter translated into all six official UN languages, underscoring the importance of cooperation and shared international values as Ghana positions itself for greater continental leadership.
